The week
(Sam Loveridge)
2023 has started pretty well, especially when it comes to kickstarting a year that's going to be rather pivotal for the games industry especially. Already this year we've had major games drop across all platforms, with today's release of the Dead Space Remake proving to be a brilliant win for horror fans.

Xbox held the first game showcase of the year this week too, giving us an update on four of its key titles - plus one excellent surprise (more on that in a minute). It was a strong start to Xbox's year of titles, even if we're still without a release date for Forza Motorsport.

So settle back and let's take a look at what awesome stuff has happened this week. It's been busy!

What to Read
Hi-Fi Rush was the surprise that stole the show at the Xbox Developer Direct
(Bethesda)
The first Xbox Developer Direct showcase happened this week, and Microsoft prefaced it with saying it would focus on updates for four upcoming games - the next Elder Scrolls Online expansion, Forza Motorsport, Redfall, and Minecraft Legends. What we didn't expect though was the announcement - and immediate release - of Hi-Fi Rush. It's a brand new game from Tango Gameworks (of The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo fame) and it's totally different to anything it's made before. Bright, colourful, and with rhythm-action combat, it's available on Game Pass and Steam right now and it's a stroke of brilliance.

What to Play
Dead Space Remake is "a sublime mix of fresh, familiar, and freaking terrifying"
(EA)
Far too terrifying for me, but for the multiple horror game lovers on our team this is absolute perfection. Reviewed by Joe Donnelly, and verdict subsequently corroborated by at least five members of the GamesRadar staff, the Dead Space Remake is setting new horror standards. And that's despite the fact it's a remake of the 2008 original, because it manages to do something very fresh at the same time. What a feat, eh?

What to Watch
Joe Cornish on creating Netflix's new "cozy scary" supernatural drama Lockwood & Co.
(Netflix)
Now, I could just recommend The Last of Us for the *checks notes* third week in a row, but we all know you're going to be watching that anyway, right? So, let's talk about Lockwood & Co., which is a new Netflix series from showrunner Joe Cornish (of Attack the Block fame). Set in alternate London, it follows a group of psychic teenagers who are hunting down and taking out spirits 50-years after a "ghost pandemic". Who you gunna call? Lockwood & Co. apparently.

Good News, Gamers
An Elden Ring streamer is playing through the game with nothing but her friggin' brain signals
(Bandai Namco)
Some days I fear I wouldn't be able to think my way out of a paper bag, and here's Twitch streamer PerriKaryal who's playing Elden Ring solely with their mind via an EEG. Madness! Isn't Elden Ring hard enough without having to ditch your controller? Humans are incredible sometimes.
