County supervisors create new homeless agency, despite warnings from L.A. mayor The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a plan to move hundreds of millions of dollars out of the region's homeless services agency on Tuesday, despite warnings from L.A. Mayor Karen Bass about creating a "massive disruption" in the region's fight against homelessness. By July 2026, the supervisors will move more than $300 million from Measure A, a half-percent sales tax, out of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, or LAHSA, and into a new county homelessness agency. LAHSA's failure to adequately oversee its contracts and programs has been sharply criticized in a pair of stinging audits. With a huge chunk of its budget slated to disappear, LAHSA's long-term future is now in question. Read more

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) breaks Strom Thurmond's record for longest Senate floor speech New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker broke Strom Thurmond's civil rights-era record for longest speech on the Senate floor, speaking for over 24 hours in a feat of endurance to show his party's objections to President Trump's sweeping actions. "These are not normal times in our nation," Booker said as he began speaking Monday night. "And they should not be treated as such in the United States Senate. The threats to the American people and American democracy are grave and urgent, and we all must do more to stand against them. "The late Sen. Strom Thurmond, of South Carolina, filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Booker's speech was not a filibuster, which is a speech meant to halt the advance of a specific piece of legislation. Read more
