Xbox is about to hit two major anniversaries: 25 years of Xbox, and 20 years of Gears of War. What better way to celebrate than by spending your weekend with E-Day – a prequel charts the origins of Marcus and Dom's friendship, born out of the brutality of Emergence Day.
For Xbox, there's a lot riding on Gears of War: E-Day. It's a flagship release for the Xbox Series X, the first console exclusive after the platform-holder doubled back on its multi-platform strategy earlier this year. It's also the first entirely new release from The Coalition in seven years. Thankfully, it's more than worth the wait.
E-Day easily captures the nostalgia so many Xbox owners feel towards the original Gears trilogy, reconnecting with the tighter focus and horror framing that was lost in more recent instalments to the series. It also advances play in some surprising ways, offering more mobility and flexibility as you traverse more dynamic, visually luxurious landscapes.
There's an argument to be made that E-Day is the best that Gears of War has been in a very long time, if not ever.
So whether you're thinking of blasting through the campaign alone or with a couple of pals, or diving into the eternally sweaty online multiplier lobbies (yes, the Gnasher still rules everything around it), I can say with some certainty that Gears of War: E-Day is one hell of a great way to spend a weekend.
