Shopify Just Killed 3 App Categories in 14 Days. Are You Still Paying for Them? |
Between July 16 and July 29, Shopify shipped native WhatsApp marketing, UPS return labels, and unlimited multi-currency payouts: three things you might currently pay $50 to $300 a month for. Every trade publication filed it under "changelog update." The question that actually matters: switch, wait, or stay? |
Here's the pattern worth internalizing: native features launch at roughly 60% of the depth of the app they displace, and the missing 40% is almost always segmentation, reporting, and edge-case handling. Whether that 60% is enough depends entirely on what you actually use, and most stores under $1M use about three functions per app. |
Here's what's working: |
Run the three-question test before touching anything. Renewal timing, workflow depth, failure cost, in that order. Each one resolves in under 30 minutes per app, and the order changes the answer more than most operators expect. Match the move to your revenue stage. Below $500K, native almost always wins, and a stack audit typically surfaces $500 to $2,000 a month in redundant spend (app bloat walkthrough). $500K to $2M is where the real analysis lives. Price the dependency trade nobody mentions. Going native raises your platform lock-in, a cost that never shows up on the invoice you just cancelled (stage-appropriate stack decisions).

Amazon's AI Is Already Rewriting Your Titles. Do You Get a Say? |
On July 27, Amazon started replacing seller-written titles with ones generated by its own model. Not truncating. Rewriting: keeping the brand and core noun, cutting what it flags as redundant, reordering what's left. Most coverage led with the 75-character cap. The number that actually matters is 14, and only some sellers get those days. |
The asymmetry nobody surfaced: Brand Registry sellers can review, edit, or reject the AI's changes for up to 14 days before they go live. Everyone else finds out after the fact, buried in their change history. Five days earlier, a second rule landed requiring metadata tags on AI-generated people in product images, triggered by a New York law carrying $1,000 to $5,000 penalties. |
Here's what's working: |
Treat Brand Registry as your veto, not a counterfeit shield. Amazon announced this rollout on Seller Central six weeks ago. Enrollment is the difference between approving your own copy and reading it after the fact. Split identity from detail across two fields. There's a new field most sellers haven't touched that changes what your title actually needs to carry, and once you see the split, most stuffed titles turn out to be leftovers from a 2019 keyword strategy. Tag synthetic performers at creation, not upload. The metadata rule reported by CNBC is narrow but easy to fail by accident, and retrofitting a catalog is far worse than fixing your workflow now.

Shopify now prints UPS return labels natively — On July 29 Shopify made UPS return labels available from any fulfilled US domestic order in the admin, using either Shopify's discounted rates or your own connected UPS account, with the label emailed to the customer or sent as a shareable link. You're only charged when the carrier scans it and unused labels expire after six months at no cost, so a paid returns app is no longer the entry price for a clean returns flow. |
WhatsApp marketing is now native in Shopify Messaging — Also on July 29, Shopify Messaging added WhatsApp campaigns alongside email and SMS, with templates, catalog media, interactive buttons, keyword replies, and pay-per-message pricing that scales up for peak season and back down after. If you sell into markets where WhatsApp out-opens email, the channel just went from an app project to a campaign you can ship this week. |
Shopify Payments dropped its eight-currency payout cap — On July 27 Shopify removed the limit on multi-currency payouts, allowing one bank account per payout currency so revenue settles in the currency it was earned in. Cross-border merchants have been quietly paying a conversion spread on every non-domestic order, and this turns that leak into a settings change. |
The protocol under agentic commerce shipped its biggest rewrite — The Model Context Protocol published its 2026-07-28 specification on July 28, its largest revision since launch, moving to a stateless core with hardened authorization and a formal extensions framework, at nearly half a billion SDK downloads a month. Shopify already deprecated its Storefront MCP cart tools in favor of UCP Cart MCP in June, so this is the plumbing your products travel through to reach ChatGPT and Copilot, and it's worth asking your app vendors which revision they're on before Black Friday. |
